Total amount in fines paid by Formosa Plastics (Texas) for clean water violations to the San Antonio Bay Estuarine Trust since 2020. Diane Wilson, a fourth generation fisherwoman and environmental activist, is founder and director of San Antonio Bay Waterkeeper. Her work against Formosa Plastics resulted in a $50 million settlement, the largest citizen-led suit in the history of the Clean Water Act.

    On October 31, 75-year-old Diane Wilson, International Monitor Formosa Alliance (IMFA), and hundreds of people around the world launched a hunger strike in solidarity to demand that Formosa Plastics Group and its subsidiaries take action to adequately address the Ha Tinh steel plant’s 2016 industrial pollution disaster.

    JFFV has aided 7,874 victims in filing a transnational lawsuit in Taiwan. The Supreme Court of Taiwan has historically been granted jurisdiction over the case, which is currently pending

  • Clean Water Act Lawsuit

    Retired Texas shrimper Diane Wilson, along with a determined environmental coalition, secured a historic $50 million settlement from plastics giant Formosa. U.S. District Judge Kenneth M. Hoyt approved the agreement, marking the largest settlement in U.S. history from a citizen-led environmental lawsuit. This victory underscores the power of grassroots activism in holding corporations accountable for environmental violations.

  • Wanhua Victory in "Cancer Alley"

    Rise St. James’ grassroots activism, including organizing community meetings and collaborating with local organizations, successfully blocked a $1.25 billion plastics manufacturing facility proposed by the Chinese chemical company Wanhua. This victory protected her community from additional hazardous waste and air pollution.
